If you were to ask me what my favorite candy is I would tell you .. what are you thinking? I’m a sugar high mama that loves all candy! But if you’re gonna twist my arm and make me pick, Hershey’s WHOPPERS would make my top 5.
I love powdered malt whether it’s in a milk shake or a glass of milk and especially when it’s in a WHOPPERS chocolate covered malt ball. So what better way to pay tribute to one of my favorite chocolate candies than to kick up the flavor into a sweet cupcake. I have to admit, this has been one of the most fun cupcakes I’ve ever made because of all the flavor experimenting that went into creating the chocolate malt buttercream. I quite literally sat in the kitchen and added a bit of this and a bit of that, adding and changing the measurements that I wrote on a cardboard box until it tastes just perfect.
Chocolate Malt Cupcake Ingredients
- 1 box of chocolate cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1 1/4 cups of water
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup Carnation Original Malted Milk powder
The first part of these cupcakes is the easy part. Just prepare either a homemade or boxed chocolate cake mix and add in the cup of malted milk powder and mix well.
Bake for 18 minutes at 350 degrees F. Oven times may vary. To be on the safe side, check your cupcakes with a toothpick at 16 minutes.
While the chocolate malt cupcakes are cooling, let’s get to the fun part of making the chocolate malt buttercream.
Chocolate Malt Buttercream Ingredients
- 1 stick of butter
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup Carnation Original Malted Milk Powder
- 2 TBS cocoa powder
- 3 TBS milk
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup WHOPPERS candy crushed for garnish
Simply combine all of the ingredients, pipe onto cooled cupcakes, garnish with crushed candy and top with a whole WHOPPERS malted milk ball.

I saw this recipe this morning, before going to Walmart and had Whoppers
on my mind. I got some in chocolate and strawberry , andbaked them this afternoon.
The chocolate cupcakes were grat. I used strawberry quick in lieu of the chocolate malt with a white cake mix. They came good, but a little on the sweet side. Will try agian with less strawberry quick. Thanks for the great recipe.
Yummy!
These look absolutely delicious! I adore Malted Milk Balls. I’m definitely going to have to try this recipe.

These are almost too cute to eat. Though, that would not stop me from devouring at least two in one sitting. ๐
I simply love the all brown colors and Hersey’s whopper on top. I am not usually sugar high but your sites make me, in a good way ๐ I keep coming back. Maybe I was a closet sugar high, and I am finding it out now ๐
Thank you so much for posting this! I will be using your site for recipes! Do you have a book coming out?

I have made this recipe twice since I found in Sunday. I used a devil’s food cake mix first and then found a milk chocolate cake mix, which I liked better. The cupcakes are delicious and possibly the most moist cupcake I have ever made. The icing is delicious and does taste like a malted milk ball. I baked these for someone’s birthday and she was thrilled. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
my mom LOVES malt balls! I am going to make her some for Valentines Day!! It seems so simple & delicious:)
When I saw this recipe today I was so intrigued about the taste of these cupcakes that I went out and bought the ingredients and rushed home to bake them. I used my own chocolate cake recipe made from scratch. Yum! I also used “chocolate” malt mix because thats all I could find. I must admit that when I tasted the frosting by itself I was a little worried that the two would not compliment each other…boy was I wrong. The flavors really work well together. My husband is not a really big fan of cupcakes but he really loved these because whoppers are his favorite candy. Thank you for a great recipe to add to my collection. My children will love you forever for this recipe.
