There was a time, many years ago, that I would spend every moment I could at the Illinois State Fair feeding my addiction to carnival rides. There was a thrill behind every loop, flip and stomach turning dive while watching the lights flash by. Then of course I grew up and realized that if I wanted to keep the contents of my bladder to myself, I had better skip the rides altogether and enjoy the plethora of fried, sweet, savory and just plain incredible state fair foods. Of course those don’t come without consequences either, heartburn just being the first thing on that list.
THE SAVORY
Pizza comes on a stick now!
Despite the mental warning of “food poisoning” tell me to run, a good Philly Steak and Cheese can’t be passed by.
Steak, potatoes, vegetables, what more could a girl ask for? … perhaps a back rub too considering this hefty little plate came with the price tag of $11.00
THE SWEET
Elephant Ear anyone?
We found the Skittle rainbow!!! Err wait, those are slushies .. and they even came in black and gray!
Sutter’s Salt Water Taffy, better for your taste buds than your teeth.
And finally … my reason for living … the Funnel Cake!
When you go to the fair, what sweet and savory eats do you most look forward to?

Good reason to live – the Funnel Cake!!
Thanks for sharing the photos, we didn’t make it this week.
Oh gosh Kasey, you gotta go! We’re taking the girls back out on Thursday while Mattison is in school and then probably again on Sunday.
Ohhhh the funnel cake is my go-to! I also love the pork-ka-bobs they sell at the local fairs… so delicious!
These pictures are making me wish there was a fair around here right now, especially the funnel cake!!
pizza on a stick, interesting. The taffy looks yum!! The slushie machine reminds me of the smoothie machines at BOBNOLA 🙂
I’m SO jealous. Fried dough, slushie’s, candy apples. you’ve got it made!
I love going to fairs just for the food! So many awesome goodies!
AWESOME reasons for attending the fair, but you missed my absolute MUST at any fair… ROASTED CORN ON THE COB! Of course, it must be laden with melted butter and blood pressure busting levels of salt for it to be fair-worthy food! Oh, and only because I’m from Wisconsin… FRIED CHEESE (in any variety that suits you… I prefer cheese curds, myself)
You know what, I never saw any corn at the fair but I might just need to look a little harder. That sounds good though especially since we missed the Sweet Corn Festival this year.
Philly Cheese Steak all the way!!!
Elephant ears are my absolute favorite. I could eat three of them in one setting. It’s a little ridiculous. Our state fair starts on Thursday and I”m so excited!
