Ham and Apple Pockets with Pillsbury Pizza Crust

General Mills challenged me and several other bloggers to come up with easy dinnertime solution using Pillsbury Pizza Crust and I took on the challenge.

These Ham and Apple Pockets are simple to make and would taste wonderful with your favorite soup for a heartier meal during the week.  With just a few ingredients, you can have something a bit different that the kids are sure to love!

If you are searching for something both sweet and savory for dinner, don’t be afraid to mix in fruit to dishes. It creates a wonderful sweetness without adding sugar. And if there is one combination of flavors I love, it is ham, apple and cheddar. Yum!

Ingredients

1 can Pillsbury® refrigerated classic pizza crust
2/3 cup cooked ham, cubed
1 small apple chopped
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (2 oz)
olive oil

Directions

Heat oven to 400°F. Saute ham, apple and onion in 1 tablespoon olive oil until apples and onion are tender.

Spray 15×10-inch pan with sides with cooking spray. Unroll dough; place on cookie sheet. Starting at center, press out dough into 14×10-inch rectangle; cut into 4 (7×5-inch) rectangles. Divide ham, apple and onion between the four rectangles, leaving a 1/ 2 inch edge. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons cheese over each.

Fold dough in half over filling; press edges firmly with fork to seal. With a pastry brush, lightly brush on olive oil. Prick tops with fork. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until light brown.

Tips:

  • Consider using leftover ham or deli ham.  I used a ham steak which worked great!
  • Red onion adds more color and a sweeter flavor to these pockets.
  • Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over tops after brushing with olive oil.
