Making sweet treats for Valentine’s Day is a given in my house. From homemade chocolates to cherry desserts, there are so many ways to celebrate this holiday with tasty desserts. These Valentine Cherry Filled Heart Cookies from Merissa Alink are the perfect way to show someone you care. Featuring a sugar cookie base filled cherry jam, these cookies are surprisingly easy. With just a single heart cookie cutter, you can create these beautiful cookies for your valentine!
Valentine Cherry Filled Heart Cookies
2 ¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 cup butter, softened
1 ½ cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
powdered sugar (for garnish, if desired)
In a large bowl, mix together the butter and sugar. Add in the egg and vanilla extract and beat until creamy. Mix in the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Stir all ingredients until well combined.
Flour the counter or surface that you will be working on. Carefully roll out the dough and cut into heart shaped cookies. Place the cookies on a lightly greased cookie sheet.
Take small pieces of dough and roll them out into thin ropes.
Place the dough around the edges of the heart to create a frame of dough around the cookie.
Bake the cookies for 10 minutes at 350 degrees or until the bottoms of the cookies are just slightly brown.
Remove from the oven and let them cool.
Take cherry jam and lightly spread the jam inside the cookie. Sprinkle with a bit of powdered sugar and serve.
Feel free to use your favorite sugar cookie recipe or even a purchased mix or refrigerated pre-made dough if you are looking for a shortcut. If cherry isn’t your favorite flavor, switch it out for your favorite red colored jam such as raspberry or strawberry.
