Sweet Italian Sausage & Peppers Artisan Pizza: Perfect for Friday Pizza Night

A sausage pizza on a baking and dessert blog. Yes, you read that right. It is a day of firsts. General Mills challenged me and several other bloggers to come up with an awesome pizza using their Pillsbury Pizza Crust [1]. And I love a good challenge.

While we all love sweets (you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t), we must eat something besides dessert. But just because we need something savory does not mean we can’t trigger our sweet tooth a bit as well.

I didn’t add any sugar, as tempting as it might be.

Instead, this pizza garnishes its sweetness from the sugars naturally found in certain vegetables like bell peppers and red onion which blend well with the tomatoes of the sauces and spices of the sweet Italian sausage. And the banana peppers, oh the sweet banana peppers, add so much zip to this pizza that I can’t believe I’ve ever ordered a pizza without them.

The crust is Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust with Whole Grain and makes this a perfect weeknight dinner solution. Or even better, perhaps your Friday night pizza night before settling down with a good movie? Either way it is quick, easy and absolutely delicious!


1/2 pound (or 3 links) sweet Italian sausage, cooked, crumbled and drained
1 can (13.8 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated artisan pizza crust with whole grain
1 can (8 oz) pizza sauce
2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese (8 oz)
1 bell pepper (red, yellow or orange) sliced into circles with stem and seeds removed
1/4 cup sliced and halved red onion
1/8 cup mild banana pepper rings
5 grape tomatoes, sliced into rounds with ends discarded


Heat oven to 400°F for dark or nonstick pan (425°F for all other pans). Spray 15×10-inch pan with sides with cooking spray. Unroll dough in pan; starting at center, press dough into 15×10-inch rectangle. Bake about 8 minutes or until light brown.

Spread pizza sauce over baked crust and top with 1 cup of mozzarella.

Top with sausage, peppers, onion and tomatoes.

Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown and cheese is melted. To serve, cut into 6 rows by 3 rows.

For a spicier option, replace the sweet Italian sausage with hot Italian sausage and use hot banana peppers.
Top with freshly chopped basil or garnish with parsley leaves for even more color.
