General Mills challenged me and several other bloggers to come up with recipes using Pillsbury Pizza Crust and I took on the challenge. If you love football like I do, then you know the big game is coming up! Growing up in my house, the Super Bowl has always been as much about the food as it about the game itself. I am a Vikings fan and it is tough when you never seem to make it into the final game anyway. Instead I get to focus on other things like ads and stuffing my face full of wonderful game day goodies. If you are looking for something that is fairly quick and easy, these pinwheels are for you! My husband wasn’t quite sure what to think of them when they first came out of the oven but he literally devoured them. I knew this recipe was a keeper when he couldn’t keep his hands off them and kept asking if he could have another one. By wrapping the dough in parchment (or cling wrap) and freezing for several minutes, it helps greatly to slice them. You’ll also notice the pinwheels can better maintain their shape.
Ingredients:
1 can Pillsbury® refrigerated classic pizza crust
1/2 cup Italian sausage or ground beef pre-cooked crumbles
1 8 oz. brick cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup Old El Paso® Thick ‘n Chunky salsa
2/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Directions
Heat oven to 375°F. In small bowl, beat softened cream cheese and salsa until well blended. Stir in sausage or ground beef crumbles and cheese. Spread cream cheese mixture over dough, leaving 1 inch uncovered on all sides. Roll up dough jelly roll style. Wrap in parchment paper and place in freezer for 15 minutes to firm. Unwrap dough from parchment paper and slice into 18 slices with serrated knife. Place on greased baking sheets. Bake 13-16 minutes or until crust is deep golden brown. Serve warm. TIPS:
- Serve with sour cream, diced green onion and additional salsa if desired.
- You can find precooked sausage or ground beef crumbled in the refrigerated meats section. Look for them near other pizza topping like canadian bacon.
- Use 1/4 lb. cooked and crumbled ground beef or Italian sausage in place of precooked crumbles.
- For an extra kick, add 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon chili powder to cream cheese mixture.
