Fondant … pretty on cakes but sounds intimidating to make yourself right? I suppose you could just go to your local craft store and buy premade fondant but have you seen the pricing on it? tasted it? Blech!
Well let me tell you, fondant, especially marshmallow fondant is not only affordable to make at home but actually quite easy and I’m here to show you how. Even if you don’t care for the taste of fondant, it sure does make cakes look beautiful and you may even fool your dinner/party guests that your cake was done by a professional.
Before I get to the video demonstration here are just a couple of examples of what can be done with marshmallow fondant. My very first experiencing wasn’t entirely perfect, but I did give it a good shot and managed to pull of this very cute (and might I add delicious) three tier ladybug cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday. You can see how each layer of the cake is smooth and clean.
And most recently, I used marshmallow fondant to cover the base cake and doll cake for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. Fondant is not only great for covering cakes but for enhancing the character of a cake design because it’s so easy to mold and use as accents.
So, are you ready to make this yourself? Watch the video below as I go through the process of making homemade fondant, even coloring it with gel color. In the future, be on the look out for more video demonstrations. You’ll find them all in one easy spot, just glance up on the navigation bar above the Oh My! Sugar High logo and click on Sugar High Videos.

This is a great tutorial cat. I had no clue making fondant was so easy. I’m actually taking a cake decorating class tonight, and this video might help with my future cake decorating endeavors ๐ Thanks!

That’s awesome Emily, I could use a few decorating classes myself. Let me know if you decide to make some, I’d love to see it!

Awesome tutorial ๐ I love making fondant from marshmallows, it’s so much more fun than getting the one already made LOL
Candace says
This is fantastic Cat. I always wondered how it was done! I don’t have an island or a lot of space would you suggest perhaps a mat for rolling and kneading? Thanks!
Cat Davis says
What you could do is cut the batch in half and do smaller batches one at time if you have just little counter space. Or if you have a stand mixer, you can make it in that with the dough hook and do the rest of the kneading on your counter top which won’t take up much space once it’s mostly combined.

Thank you so much for doing this tutorial, I was just asking for a recipe for or Marshmallow Fondant on Wilton! I currently use Wilton’s fondant, I love working with fondant but nobody likes the taste of it. So I thought it was time to try something different, so this was a big help!!! Now I just need a awesome butter cream Icing recipe, lol!

I’ve always been nervous to try the marshmallow fondant after trying fondant. Just taste wise. But I bet marshmallow isn’t horrible.. I’ll have to try it ๐
Kim says
Now can you color it after making it like regular fondant?
Cat Davis says
Hi Kim, yes you absolutely can, especially if you need to divide the fondant and make multiple colors from a single batch. You’ll just need to put on some gloves to avoid turning your hands whatever color you’re using during the kneading process.
Kim says
Great, thanks! ๐

Okay Cat, you really have made this look simple. I want to try it myself now!
Holli says
Can you work with it right from the fridge or does it need to be room temp.? I have never worked with fondant before because of the taste, but this I’d be willing to give a try.

Thanks so much for the tip about using the dough hook and the Kitchen Aid mixer, I am unable to knead anything that long because of my neck and nerve damage and surgery, but I do have a Kitchen Aid. I think I’ll try this some time because I have always wanted to try making fondant.
Great tutorial, thanks!!

I haven’t watched the tutorial saw a pic from a Sugar High Friend on facebook and searched for it. I am glad I found it. Every time I have bought fondant I have always mixed in an extract for flavor. It turns out pretty well. If you use the liquid extract and it becomes sticky just roll it in more powdered sugar (doesn’t take much) and you then have flavor in your fondant. Extract also comes in powder form. You are very right about the price for it is very high and I am making a wedding cake for this weekend so thank you very much for this tutorial.

ok watched the tutorial now and that was great! I can place the chocolate flavor at the same time I add the color. Thank you very much from a mom of 3 kids who loves to bake to a mom of 3 kids who loves to bake. ๐

HI! Thanks for the video! I’ve never worked with fondant but have tasted it and never been impressed. I’m excited to see how this works! My question is in terms of how much fondant covers how much cake? I am making a 3 tiered cake (9/13, 8×8, 4×4). How many “batches” of your recipe do you think will be needed for coverage and decor (decor will be mostly ribbons). THANKS!!!!
