I didn’t start using a decorating bag for cupcakes until I was fortunate enough to visit Wilton headquarters and take cake decorating class over the course of several days. I was always intimidated but I didn’t need to be. Once you learn proper grip and pressure, it is super easy to create beautiful desserts. Within no time I was making fun desserts like this train cake for my son’s birthday.
Ingredients and Supplies for Flower Cupcakes
To make these flower cupcakes you’ll need the following:
- vanilla cupcakes
- butter
- confectioners’ sugar
- milk
- violet gel food coloring
- green fondant
- decorating bag
- Wilton tip #74
Your vanilla cupcakes can be made from scratch, cake mix or store bought. Have you ever scraped off icing from store bought cupcakes? This is an easy hack to create more unique cupcakes than what you can find in stores.
How to Make Flower Cupcakes
Once you’ve made your icing and tinted it violet, you’ll want to fill your decorating bag fitted with a Wilton Tip #74 with your buttercream. Make sure you don’t overfill your bag so you don’t have a mess. You’ll only want to go about 2/3 of the way up.
Frost each cupcake with buttercream flowers by dropping a small dollop, about ½ an inch in diameter in a circular motion. Start in the center and surround it with 5 to 6 other flowers, along the circumference of your cupcake.
Kitchen Tip: If you don’t feel comfortable working with the #74 tip, I suggest practicing a few times on a piece of parchment paper. You can easily scrap it off and use it on your cupcakes later so practice until you feel confident.
To make fondant leaves, roll out a small sphere from your green fondant, about ¼ of an inch in size.
Flatten sphere then point it on one end. Place 3-4 randomly on each cupcake. That is all there is to making these flower cupcakes! Aren’t they gorgeous?
Flower Cupcakes
If you have ever wondered how to make flower cupcakes, they are much easier than you might think! Don't let a decorating bag and tip scare you off from making gorgeous cupcakes with flowers that can be turned into the most beautiful cupcake flower bouquet. Whether you are celebrating Mother's Day, a bridal shower or just want some flower birthday cupcakes, this dessert is sure to brighten anyone's day!
Ingredients
- 12 vanilla cupcakes
- 1 stick butter softened
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 2-3 tbsp milk
- ¼ tsp violet gel food coloring
- 1-2 oz. green fondant
Instructions
-
Before decorating, make sure cupcakes are cool to the touch. Otherwise, buttercream will slide/melt right off.
-
Using an electric mixer, beat together softened butter, sugar and milk on medium speed.
-
Increase speed to high.
-
Once the buttercream starts to take form, add gel food coloring. Mix until completely tinted.
-
Scoop purple buttercream into a piping bag with Wilton icing tip #74 attached.
-
Frost each cupcake with buttercream flowers. To achieve this look, frost a small dollop, about ½ an inch in diameter in a circular motion. Start in the center and surround it with 5-6 other flowers, along the circumference of your cupcake.
-
To make fondant leaves, roll out a small sphere from your green fondant, about ¼ of an inch in size.
-
Flatten sphere then point it on one end. Place 3-4 randomly on each cupcake.
Since Wilton Tip #74 doubles as both a flower petal and leaf tip, you can skip the fondant if desired. Instead of using green fondant for leaves you can tint some of the icing green and pipe leaves instead.
These buttercream flower cupcakes were made as full sized cupcakes but could easily be made with mini cupcakes and then attached to a foam ball and placed into a flower pot with toothpicks. You can view a full tutorial here. You could also place these cupcake flowers in a bouquet shape and add additional stems to pull them all together like they did in this example.
